Swimming Pool Size: Key Considerations

Different Styles of Pools

Pool size and shape depend on the type of pool you choose. This decision also affects the pool design, such as whether you want a circular or rectangular pool or want to include water features.

Lap Pools

Lap pools are ideal for people who like to swim laps—hence the name. These pools make an excellent choice if you swim for sport or exercise. Smaller lap pools are also perfect for homes on tight lots or with low acreage.

Generally, lap pools are between six and ten feet wide and run anywhere between 30 and 80 feet in length.

Plunge Pools

Plunge pools are the opposite of lap pools. They are best for relaxation and can accommodate a few people but are still great options for small yards. Their sizes range from six to eight feet wide and 10 to 20 feet long.

Fiberglass Pools

Fiberglass inserts sit in special holes in the ground. Fiberglass doesn’t work for larger pools, so these tend to be on the smaller end, averaging 10 feet by 20 feet in size.

Aboveground Pools

These pools are the most cost-effective option but are labor-intensive and tend not to hold up very well. Neither do they have many design options since they’re almost exclusively circular. However, if you don’t mind these drawbacks, you can have a pool as small as 12 feet wide or as big as 30 feet wide.

Custom Pools

Custom pools are fantastic, especially for people with extra money who know what they want. If you have a vision for an awesome pool, don’t settle for anything less than what you want. Designing a custom pool is expensive, and construction may take a long time, but the results are worth it.

Other Factors To Consider

There are a couple of other things to consider when determining the best swimming pool size. One is the number of people you plan on having in your pool regularly. If you want to throw big pool parties, consider paying a little extra for a bigger pool.

Budget is another primary concern. If you don’t have the money for a large inground pool, consider downsizing to a smaller pool. It’s better to compromise on the size of your pool than to put yourself in debt with an extravagant pool you don’t need.

Ongoing Maintenance

Ongoing maintenance is another thing to remember about swimming pool size. Bigger pools require more work than smaller pools, and you should only build what you can maintain. We have other resources if you want to learn more about swimming pool maintenance.
